    Reader comments on Dogville

    Subject: Rumours about Dogville
    Date: Mar 30, 2004
    Sender: FunraiserPrevious | Next

Taken from godville's, oupss, I mean dogvill's web site 'Yes, its about the United States but its also about any small town anywhere in the world.' ( Von trier speaking).

I checked the web site to verify if Von trier was describing the US of A society, as some comments on this forum might suggest, or even want us to believe, or if he is actually making a general description of the human nature. Which I am now 100% sure after checking his interview, is what he does in his movie.

This forum is actually a nice 'illustration' of the story: Some here believe that the dogs are the others, (the americans for example) but not themselves, and that is a highly arrogant thinking. Maybe those who think that way shoud 'forgive' the americans for being so mean??(That is what Grace was doing, right? forgive? Hence the arrogance of you who think that way)

I think we are ALL dogs sometimes, and angels at other times. People like the dogville citizens or Grace, do not exist, we are all a mix of those caracters.

The way I understand Von trier's story, is that we should never let other people do things to us that we would not do to them, and that way the world would be a better place.

Grace had troubles because she let other people use her; Had she not allowed it, that would not have happen. If you allow people to have some power on you, they are actually going to use that power.

Plus i don't see the final shooting as a revenge, but more as a symbolic gesture of what one should do when manipulated. Refuse! ( except that Grace waits too long for doing it)

Last thing: Congratulations Lars Von Trier, from my point of view your movie is an absolute masterpiece.

    Re: Dogville

please read all the other comments. they support some of the ideas presented in the movie, especially the one about arogance, let's call it condescendence. some of the comments complained about the bad spelling some have, other about meola missing the point of the movie. isn't that showing your teeth, like the dog in dogville? and the very fact that i felt the need to post a comment is evidence of the little barking dog within myself.
not many people liked the movie. in the theatre i went to many left and i've heard from friends they were confronted with the same situation. perhaps the movie does abuse symbolism and technical moves. but it sure is fascinating and it is based on a very human need: that to discuss human nature. so don't thank lars von trier , thank all the ones who posted comments.
and another thing.the movie is political in many ways, especially considering the response to 9.11 that has been rocking the world more than 9.11 itself
