Your idea is great, and a lot simpler than most of the confusion that's going on. It also explains the little people which mos't have failed to do.

after watching it twice i believe (and i'm probably wrong) that the first half of the movie is a bargain with the devil that diane made (the old couple bringing her into her new life at the airport) a life where she gets to have the woman she loves being dependent on her while her failing acting career is on the up. A world that only she knows isnt real. Everyone else has suspiciouns that it isnt real. (the director, the old lady in the building, dianes next door neigbhor). i think the deal she made is that as long as that blue box isnt open everything will remain like that. But once the box is open shes back to her regular horrible life. once the box is open her real life returns and at the end the old couple come to collect her soul in return she panics and kills her self.. I think the guy behind the dinner is the devil as he has the blue box and the old couple at the end come from him. comments on my idea? email me... this movie is a great discussion
