    ........
One certainly could not say about you that
"you haven't got the foggiest" because your critique of "the Fog of War" was succinct and precisely to the point. Bravo and not-so-cheerful cheers! monique

    Response to this comment:
    Same Movie??

Did I see the same movie?

The point is not R. McNamara's level of senility or a now hollow indictment of actions he was actually against. The point is the real life struggle between his loyalty to a pro-escalation President Johnson and his personal belief in de-escalation. If it wasn't for his regular assertion to Johnson that we were losing and should therefore de-escalate the war, Johnson may have "cut-bait" even later.

An even deeper point is what we gain today given the very same struggle we find ourselves. His candidness, at whatever level of accuracy, offers the ability to learn (as he suggested) from our mistakes. He stated very clearly that we were mistaken about the nature of the Vietnamese and that given our level of power we should not act unilaterally; for if we can't even pursuade cultures similar to our own to go to war then we should question our rationals. If we are truly concerned about saving lives and saving the viability of future democracies, then this movie should be required viewing for all U.S. officials.

    Cheers,
    Josh
