I wrote big long letter, ran out of room.Had to
cut half of it out.I mentioned that Mulholland Drive is both a pinacle and split down the middle. The Cowboy is a benevelant messenger from somewhere else.Maybe the room with the green Formica table. So what's missing from my last letter.
The jitterbug contest looks completely unreal. We see Betty smiling with joy,her face
bathed in a gleaming bright light. Is she in Heaven? The old couple reflect her happiness,
they are insync with her.Unfortunately, when Betty becomes Diane, and love becomes self-loathing,the old couple return, still insync, now full of hellish terror.Maybe they are
her conscience.
On TWIN PEAKS,David Lynch began to experiment with the"two can be one and one can be two"motif. You can trace that back to
Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO.Dark haired Judy
becomes blonde Madeline as part of a murder
scheme.Scott Fergusson falls in love with"Madeline"If her name had really been Madeline and if she had married him,her name would have been Madeline Fergusson.
The exact same name of blonde Laura's dark haired cousin from Montana. She even puts on a blonde wig to pose as dead Laura to fool Dr.Jacoby.This is probably why he had a heart attack.
In LOST HIGHWAY,blonde Patricia Arquette
is very likely the vengeful spirit of the previously murdered dark haired Patricia Arquette. The fact that killer Bill Pulman has turned into Balthazar Getty, does not stop her from finding him and luring him into his own destruction. Two can be one and one can be two.
Our little trip now brings us back to Mulholland Drive. Two blondes? Two brunetts?
I don't know if Betty or Rita were ever real, but if they were, they eventually errode into Diane and her ex-roommate.The ex-roommate is not
there by accident, she is definately Diane's former lover.Maybe Betty and Rita are what love looks like and Diane and her ex are what
disappointment and bitterness look like.It all seems to end in the worst possible way,or does it?Isn't one of the very last shots of the movie an extreme close-up of the two women's faces bathed in a glorious white light. They look so happy. Is this merely the last
comforting image a bleeding brain can conjure before slipping into oblivion?Or are they walking toward the light of God's forgiveness and love, together at last after all.
FIRE,WALK WITH ME had a similar "happy" ending, but again, not of this Earth. We see the
spirit of dead Laura Palmer, with Dale Cooper at her side, looking sad and lost until a bright light begins to shine upon her.Slowly she looks up and at last sees the angel she thought had left her behind.Soon she is overcome with joy as she realizes all her pain and sadness are gone, because,at long last, she is in Heaven.
