For those of you who don't LA,
Mulholland Drive is a special street. It runs along the pinacle of the Hollywood Hills. It twists and turns and is very dangerous if you go fast enough.
Funny thing about Mulholland Drive,It's the highest street in Hollywood.Dividing Hollywood from North Hollywood, cut's it right in half. It's home to many of Hollywood's most successful. It's as high as you can go and the only place to go from there is down.
Mulholland Drive.I've seen many ingenious interpretations here online.I'm inclined to go with those who believe the pillow at the begining represented the begining of a dream or a death,or both. They say your whole life flashes before you,is it possible that the wonderful, imaginary life you never had might flash before you instead,if you want it bad enough.
After reading every comment on the subject
{it took me two days}I feel that this movie has been explained better than I thought possible or neccessary, not than I mind it being too well explained,it's just that I've read Mr.Lynch prefers not to answer every question and believes not every mystery should be solved. If every answer was handed to you on a silver plater, well that would be that, end of story.Anyone can make a movie that "makes sense".The time and thought that went into this convoluted, enigmatic puzzle blows my mind.Even if you don't see the sense intellectually, you can certainly get it emotionally. That is the key to dreams and David Lynch. It really is alot of fun to be left bewildered. It's funny, people get upset with David because he makes you think, makes you wonder.People aren't used to thinkng, they get all bent out of shape, instead of enjoying the sublime mind f**k that only Mr.Lynch can provide. Many movies are pretty forgettable, with David's movies, they become increasingly more important after the first viewing, they really haunt you.I've become addicted to Mulholland Drive.Must watch again and again, like a favorite song.
It really looks like "Betty" is Diane's fantasy, her broken hearted ideal.Just too perfect to be real.
Hey,whose that cowboy? The cowboy is merely a messenger. To understand the Cowboy,It helps to have seen "Fire,Walk With Me".In FWWM you hear a mouth whisper the word "Electricity".When Dale Cooper investigates the trailer park,we get a good look at the telephone and electric lines. There's more than electricity flowing on those lines.Apparently spirits like BOB or Mrs.Tremane or those who inhabit the lodges both white and black travel more easily by means of electricity. When ever you see strobe or flickering lights,a doorway is being opened.Something is trying to get through.Such is the cowboy, when Adam Kershner arrives at the corral, there's an old light fixture atop the the entrance. The old bulb looks like it hasn't been on in years. As Adam waits in the corral, the old bulb starts to flicker on and off, until it finally it shines brightly.Enter the Cowboy. My guess is that he's not a living person, though probably was at one time, and he has manifested himself here and now ,through an electrical path,to help Adam Kershner.Adam's ego and his temper have really been getting the best of him.He needs good advice.Cowboy asks a question,Adam is a smart aleck.Cowboy asks
"Are you just saying what you think I want you to say or do you really believe what you have said".Finally,Adam drops the bullshit. The Cowboy has brought about a moment of truth.Adam gets real and pays attention for the moment.Cowboy tells him to go along with the powers that be.Cowboy doesn't care about movie.Just wants Adam to not be a fool.Cowboy exits, light bulb flickers, then goes dark.He and his electricity have moved on.Mission acomplished.Adam is finally really thinking.
The bum behind Winkies? This is where Diane did her darkest deed. She paid for murder. The bum is merely what the evil deed looks like. The nervous man who had dreams about the bum?Somehow sees the evil of a dark deedI,but has no idea what it is .I don't believe the bum is death or anything else,he just looks like the evil that took place at Winkie's. He is what a murder looks like, but I think he is clueless about everything else in the story. The nervous man says he is behind everything. This makes Diane's hired hit look like a Hitchcockian Maguffin. It is hidden,it is behind everything, just like the bum "hiding" behind Winkie's.
