    Dear Lin,

Ben Stiller? Ugh. Your plight inspired the following list of movies (hopefully, you havenāt seen a few of these) to make you feel human again.

    Stylish Fun:

The Professional. Slick action with a sly subtext: when the smoke clears, think about whoās competent, whoās a sucker, who survives, and why.

Diva. Adapted from a pulp novel, itās a comedy of errors masquerading as a new wave hipster flick, with cool lofts, a great soundtrack and a surprising number of laughs.

Insomnia, with Stellan Starsgaard (NOT the Al Pacino version). Film noir in the land of the midnight sun. Clever, complicated and creepy.

    Genuinely Funny:

Glorious and/or Dressed to Kill. Eddie Izzard, the funniest man in the world, doing standup. Show this to your friends, and your Ben Stiller problem will go away forever.

24 Hour Party People. Offoffoff hated it, but I think itās a romp. Featuring Steve Coogan, another world-class comic whose deadpan delivery wipes the floor with Stiller.

    Documentary:

The Devilās Playground. A stereotype-smashing look at Amish kids going wild, with a soundtrack by The Aphex Twin. Not perfect, but oddly moving and memorable.

    Depth of Feeling:

Lost in Translation. This yearās antidote for all the gender-addled untruths cluttering the average Nora Ephron flick.

In the Mood for Love. A memorably sexy film from Wong Kar Wai. A great companion to Lost in Translation in terms of feel.

Wings of Desire. A rainy day, bottle of wine film. Give it an hour. If you hate it, okay. But if it hits you right, it might sneak into your permanent top ten.

Paris, Texas. Wim Wenders and Sam Shephard somehow save each other from themselves, and Harry Dean Stanton is unbelievably good.

Dancer in the Dark. Listen to it with a good sound system, and it just might tear your heart out.

Niagara Niagara, Heavy, Buffalo 66÷a trio of films in the depressing-but-good-category, featuring good to excellent acting, great soundtracks, interesting takes on love, and bleak but stylized New York State backdrops.

Y Tu Mama Tambien. The central conceit of the film÷the difference in meaning of the road trip between the boys and the woman÷packs a punch at the end.

    Mindless fun:

Oceanās Eleven (the Steven Soderbergh version): Just a hoot.

The Bourne Identity: Basically, itās the Wizard of Oz. Except Matt Damon is Dorothy and thereās lots more guns.

Sexy Beast: a love story masquerading as a heist flick. Tiny Ben Kingsley and even tinier Ian McShane scaring ferocious Ray Winstone is the giant inside joke of the film.

Laurel Canyon. More like a great, guilty-pleasure TV show than a movie, but itās still beautifully shot and fun to watch.

Enjoy. And my sympathies about your Along Came Polly predicament.

    Response to this comment:
    Re: Raging Cow?

Well, here we are at a impasse, although I am very sympathetic to your principled position on whether the ends justify the means. I still conclude that this film has transcended it's exploitative genre and given us a glimpse of the most exquisite pain and suffering. I felt more human watching this performance than the brain-numbing coverage of current world events. My colleagues would rather see "Along Came Polly" any day and avoid brushing up against anything that might approach truth.

In any case, I'm appreciative of your critical eye; I welcome your anger and your passion.
