    Vincent,

    You're right. We disagree.

Herbert von Karajan was one of the great symphonic conductors of the 20th century. Leni Riefenstahl was one of the last century's finest directors. In any debate about artistic merit, it's hard to find anyone who argues with the quality of the their work.

You can, however, find a lot of people who refuse to buy von Karajan's records or watch Riefenstahl's films. They do so on principle: Riefenstahl's film Triumph of the Will propogandized the merits of Nazi Germany, and rather than risking his life and stepping down, von Karajan joined the Nazi party and conducted the Berlin Philharmonic during Hitler's regime.

Admittedly, these are extreme examples in the art world, but I think they speak to my point:

No one is arguing that Monster is a lousy film. I certainly can't--I haven't seen it. By all accounts, it is a well-made, moving work of art.

I am also not arguing for censorship--the filmmakers are free to make whatever film they want to make.

But I am asking that, as free agents, people should consider passing on this film, to send a message to filmmakers everywhere that the ends (the quality of the film) don't justify the means (in this case, the exploitation of the pain of real people).

Finally, it's not an easy call. If you love classical music but choose to pass on von Karajan, you're missing out on some of the finest recordings ever made. And even if you skip out on Riefenstahl, her influence is unavoidable--her techniques have been so widely copied that they are now embedded in the language of film.

But people do pass on the works of these artists, not as a comment on the quality of the work, but as a protest against the motivations behind and conditions under which the art was created.

So, in a nutshell, let's say Monster is a great film. I say skip it anyway.

It is a case of different viewpoints. Ethan, you might be extremely well-informed of the whole big first women serial killer story, and of how much use you have given in your vignettes of dreary Hollywood hordes, but you really do miss the point of the movie. If I were Theron, the script would haunt me for life. I think there is a well defined grade of appreciation that should be given for people who can let you powerfully into a life beaten "beyond redemption" and get you to sympathize almost nothing. Incredible movie...
