Subject: Does the term "Blood Money" ring a bell?
    Date: Jan 9, 2004
    Sender: EthanPrevious | Next

    Hmm. Let's review.

A real woman named Aileen Wuornos lived and died horrifically, killing seven people and decimating the love of her life along the way.

A savvy screenwriter uses the story to corral a big name Hollywood babe for peanuts, pitching the obvious Nicole-Kidman-transition-into-serious-roles angle. The screenwriter lands her directorial debut, the big name babe gets Oscar hype. And they both can hide behind the fact that this is a "legit" project, because of the small budget.

I mean, think of the career moves humming along behind this picture--Charlize Theron shifts from Italian Job eye candy to Raging Cow. The picture doesn't get made/marketed without her star power/circus freak trick of babe-turned-monster. She skips one paycheck, gets Oscar consideration for not making Mighty Joe Young II, and then gets the option of jumping to Antony Minghella's next Overblown Spectacle or raking in mondo bucks for Mighty Joe Young II.

Meanwhile, nobody screenwriter Patty Jenkins breaks through to indie flavor of the month without ever coming up with an original story. In fact, all she does is recycle the already proven Boys Don't Cry formula--crushingly sad real life story turned low-budget Oscar vehicle, no doubt paving the way for future pretentious pictures. Only this time, she's savvy enough to have hauled in a starlet along the way.

Together they lure a galaxy of sucker crowds: the true crimers and other assorted rubberneckers, reactionary feminists and lesbians (NOT the clearer-headed members of those groups, who don't fall for every story that just happens to feature exploited women in love), the Entertainment Tonighters, the serious cineasts, the Oscar chasers, and the most tiresome of all, the indie street cred junkies.

Monster, indeed--the whole thing was lifted from real people who suffered and died, and who don't get paid while the savvy Hollywooders cash in.

Put another way, Charlize Theron and Patty Jenkins get to opine about the sorrow of Aileen Wuornos on Charlie Rose, but hey, at least the real victims of the Wuornos story get to watch them for free on PBS...

This is a cyncial vehicle, made by people who are either deeply cynical or so self-absorbed that they don't see the irony of their actions. So no, I don't care how good this picture is--it's made by vultures, and every dollar you spend on it is blood money. Please pass on this film.
