Reader comments on The Triplets of Belleville

I loved this movie. The digs at the
French were hilarious especially as the movie was
made by a Frenchman. I thought the obvious existentialism was part of the joke (Sartre is on the school curriculum in France). The quality of the animation is consistently maintained which is unusual. The graphic style has a feel of French and Belgian comic books combined with a Toulouse Lautrec poster style. I loved the way it looked. The relationships are interesting. There is a real-life quality to the dynamics (the grandmother and the boy, the three sisters). I enjoyed the fact Chomet had the imagination to have four elderly women as his central characters and that he stayed away from trite story formulas such as a romance or adventures of a child in a nuclear family.
