    Try this reading:
    Kidman is the Democrats.
First she is Kennedy, the young child of the powerful and dominant classes who went off the track and decided to change the world. To try to help. But was hunted and shot by the dominant classes.
And then she becomes Lyndon Johnson, who took Kennedy's place on condition (imposed by the dominant classes - maffias, gangsters, big army chiefs, father figures, whatever, republicans anyway) that he would bring the USA to war. (which is how and why the Viet-nam war started)

The thing is that most people I know where actually relieved by the final shooting. It is a classical Hollywood trick - after all the tension, the ups and downs, the disappointments, and the sorrow of rape, one is liberated by the final violence of revenge. Efficient, precise, thorough revenge.
But the next feeling is shame. Through revenge she - and we - become part of the evil system. By the time the baby is shot, (think of little ali in irak), we realize we've let ourselves go too far with our tantrum.

Then the dramatic images of real misery, as photographed by Richard Avedon and friends, in contrast with the abstract stageing of the film on one side, and with the happy-go-lucky rhythm but equally dramatic Bowie song on the other, remind us of the fact that improving things means hard work and a lot of compromise, and avoiding fits of kill-em-all hollywood catharsis.

    Response to this comment:
    Dogville

Hi, I agree with all your opinions about this masterpiece. Itęs clearly about mankind's behaviour and not about the United States. The people who understood it like that (and sadly major critics, with influence millions of people) are so blind in a freakish level of nacionalism that generally feel attacked by metaphores that not necesarly applies to their country. This surely is because in a deep way they recognize all this terrible actions in Dogville as something that probably their goverment actually did.
Anyway, this comment is absolutly my thought and is not posted here to cause controversy.
I write here because I actually didn't understand something in the film: When the final credits appear, what's with those cold images, specially with that music! The music seamed a bit offplace to me, given the shoking ending it had just taken place there.
So, I was hoping someone coud clear this doubt for me, maybe is something I didn't get.
    Thanks.
