Reader comments on City of Ghosts

Subject: Not quite "City of Ghosts"

City of Ghosts is plagued by 'not quite'. The soundtrack and location are very good, and Dillon captures some of the atmosphere we may expect but "not quite" as much as we want.

Most of the characters add to the atmosphere and draw us into the tale, except Dillon's.
If he had found a more convincing lead actor this may have been a far better film. He was the one that was 'not quite' believable. On the other hand, my hat's off to Gerard Depardieu who was a joy to watch in his character as an expatriate hotel/bar owner.

The filming captured the charm of the country which "needs a coat of paint" but did 'not quite' allow us to fully experience the culture and the countryside. The story was a bit hard to follow at times, leaving us with 'not quite' enough suspense to allow us to care about what happened next.

Dillon deserves some credit though, as a first time director, in capturing at least some atmosphere and delivering at least some of the real life charm of Cambodia even where the story leaves us 'not quite' satisfied.

In spite of any shortcomings I may perceive, this film is a great accomplishment in the following sense. In a world of film where big name music artists fill the soundtrack, and computerized special effects along with countless explosions and unbelievable action sequences fill our screens and insult our intelligence, I appreciate the courage demonstrated by Dillon and his crew in telling the story in the way they did.

If you would like to take a break from mindless production line, formulaic mega-budget films, in order to take vacation to an exotic locale, try this film. You may enjoy it in spite of its shortcomings.
