Subject: the target will love it

being a fairly promiscuous, substance abusing nihilistic type myself, i devoured a few of easton ellis' books, rules included, in younger days. even then i was struck by the bored privilege of it all and was kinda underwhelmed by it. who cares if a bunch of attractive rich wasters can't find any purpose or meaning in their lives? most people have more immediate concerns to worry about and less resources at hand to deal with them. excellent production/camera work aside, i found the story and characters about as engaging as an episode of Dawsons. james van der beek surprised me though - captured the bored moral vacuity of his character really well. this'll appeal to the younger set who get off on such superficial debauch and excess. and yes, written as an indictment of the times, this really should have been set in the 80s
