never thought of this - I love your take on the Aunt - this takes the dream structure way out there - you blew my mind - thanks - this is what makes cinema or any story so interesting - Lynch may or may not have intended this but its has real wings as an interpretation

I completely agree with your opinion, that the lady is Rita in the future,as well as Aunt Ruth is Betty/Diane i th future!!
Iām surprised that in all reviews and interpretations of the movie so little attention is paid to the Aunt for I think sheās the principal character. Betty/Diane is Aunt Ruth in her young years! Itās her story.
Look, the movie is about a young girl who came from Canada to make a career in Hollywood. She was dreaming to become a famous actress, a movie star. Itās Auntās dream ö thatās why she had Rita Heyworthās poster on the wall ö movie star from the 50ās. All the movies Adam is making are placed in the 50/60ās, also Dianeās apartment is far from being modern (the fridge, the oven), the dance contest she wins· Also Camilla has always this dramatic look like movie stars in the 50ās had ö she never looks ćmodernä. Why? Thereās no other reason in this insistence in the 50.
One more thing ö Aunt makes her appearance when Betty disappears. Betty didnāt leave the room, wasnāt sucked by the bluebox - she vanished to reappear as the Aunt!
This is the clue ö whereās Aunt Ruth? And there is no other explanation to this clue and I tried to guess all the clues I remember and everything seems to fit..
The reality of Betty and Diane are probably the two possible ways her life could have been.
