Being a great movie it might have some incongruous readings:

At one point L. Fishburne says that Kev. Bacon is biased bec. the investigated (Jimmy) is his friend, to which Kev. responds "if he's guilty I'll jump faster than you to cuff him". This remark alone donotes that Kevin Bacon's character is a righteous and honest cop (the film doesn't portray him with a murky past, unlike the 2 other boyhood friends). So WHY does Kevin let Jimmy go knowing that he has committed TWO murders!? It doesn't add up to his character. Nor after viewing the entire movie we could deduce that Sean-Kevin owes any favor to Jimmy, from the past or the present.

    Re: Mystic DisaPpointment (SPOILERS)

I just picked up a copy of the book having sensed that the film failed to convey what it had set out to. I agree with Joshua's review (that the murder of Jimmy's daughter was trivialized,)but I intepreted Sean pointing the finger @ Jimmy in the final scene differently. The three main characters have something else in common beside growing old nearby the mystic river. In the beginnig, all three were fooled by those they thought were authorities. Later, each acts as his own authority in his adult life. Sean would seem to be the most obvious example of this as he chose to become a cop. This also appears to seperate him from Jimmy and Dave. We know that Jimmy has taken matters into his own hands once before, and observe it for ourselves when he kills Dave. We find out Dave gets his own retribution by killing a child molester. But Sean is no different from Jimmy and Dave, he passes his own judgement too. When he tells Jimmy that Dave didn't kill his daughter, that it was just some senseless in the wrong place at the wrong time situatuion, he knows that that in itself will be even worse to have to live with than the fact that he killed a friend for no reason.I have a hard time accepting Sean's explanation b/c the story is set up perfectly for the murderer (mute boy) to have a motive- he was a/b to be abandoned by his brother. I have not read the book yet. After seeing the film, I don't get the impression that Sean is going to pursue Jimmy, I think he got his. If this theory of mine is correct then I can undrestand Eastwood's intent for trivializing the murder of Jimmy's daughter.
