Subject: did fenton really kill anyone

I am confused as to if fenton was really the god's hand killer. did he really kill those people and leave notes for the fbi and put the bodies in his basement? I dont think so, I think it was adam but why did he do this,(to frame fenton) but why? why didnt he just kill them quietly and bury them in the garden like all the others. or have I completely missed something here.
