    Reader comments on El Alamein

Subject: Re: not really a war movie

I got the DVDs and I saw them a few days ago.
I reckon it's a good movie, especially because it deals with a theme that has almost never been treated by major productions: the few cases of italian heroism and valour in WWII, often forgotten by a country who needs to develope a sense of national pride more than anybody else in Europe, I think. Exactly for this reason it should have deserved the attention of the "big spending" production companies. Anyway the poor use of effects (due to limited budgets obviously) is largely compensated by the loyal account of the events depicted. I recognized the same atmosphere as perceived while reading the book written by one of the veterans that has been interviewed in the "extra" section of the DVDs; this should testify the director's effort to be as close to the real events as possible.
I'd like to see more often movies like "El Alamein" that, to some extent, make up for those stereotyped shameful productions like "Capt.Corelli's mandolin" that give a really incomplete and distorted and often ridiculing (I found it insulting as an italian) version of the events occurred in Cefalonia in the aftermath of the italian surrender of the 8th of september 1943.

I saw the movie and since now I live in Egypt I went to visit El Alamein. I have to say that once there I had the feeling I already new the places I was visiting. I think the movie has been representing with high level of reality the struggle of the soldiers fighting against a non visible enemy in one of the hotest desert depresions. Difficult to imagine day light tank combats ... the night activity seems more realistic when trying to gain some meters of hard sand on a completly flat monocoloured land !!
