I agree, this film is excellent. It kept me thinking about it, the characters, and how their motivations were so well depicted (not told)long after. A must see - don't blink.

    Re: Dangerous Propaganda

    Dangerous:
You misunderstood the movie. The "settler" you say bombed the bus at the end was not a settler but an Arab. You didn't follow the story and dialog. What is more, the director and actors in this film were magnificent. One of the issues in
Israeli society is that when you live there you cannot tell who is an Arab or a Jew (as happened in your case) yet the Arabs do what happened at the end of the picture. That is, the Arab character runs with Mendy and Mike, tells Mike he is like a brother, even provides Mike with hash,
runs with Mendy like a friend, then blows him up
(although the Arab character probably didn;t know Mendy would be on that bus). I've read critical reviews panning this film by critics who are way off the mark. They claim the dialog and plot are too thin. The problem is the critics know nothing of the pressures in Israeli society today. The director of course took some license. Not all settlers are whackos like the character in the film, but some are. The Israeli actress who played the prostitute was AMAZING. IN fact, the cast was fantatic. For newcomers, these actors were so believeable and brought the directors characters to life. I felt like I was in Israel, although in an underworld part of it.

The film is underrated. I am an Israel activist and do not like films that would seem to trash Israel. THis film didnlt bother me at all. It showed a subculture we all have and as for critics complaining Mendy had no spiritual crisis,
this filmwas not about Judaism, or even Israel. It was about PEOPLE in Israel. And Israel as the refuge of Jews, even the poorest like the prostitute and Mike end up there. She goes to a church; ostensibly she is not a Jew but had to qualify as one to be in Israel. Mendy is clearly bored with his Ortodox lifestyle, Mike is happy go lucky, avoiding tax problems in the US. The settler is a fanatic, the Arab is a nice guy, but sometimes...

Too bad this movie is misunderstood. I haven't seen such amazing actors in such a low budget film in years and I'd love to know how funding was raised to produce this, the casting, etc.
Reviews have been unfair by people who are artsy fartsy rather than understanding of Israeli society, albeit its underworld. I'd lvoe to know hwo this was cast and the backfground of the actors. I never once felt I was awatching a movie, but somehow watching real people. And finally, Israel, her good and bad is all about that: her people, Jews. Arabs, Russians, Americans etc. and life is just a day at a time,
no need for great introspection: these people jsut want to live. Holy Land peeps, if yous ee my comments, please contact me. I want to help you rpomote this terrific film.
