I know the first time I saw MD I was totally in the dark. The film was amazing to me on more levels than one, but I still got most of the imagery.
First off, allt he characters are beautfully woven together, they all share a common thread and to be honest I am stunned that so few people got it.
Have you ever dreamed? Not just a simple dream, but one you just didn't want to wake from, but something caused you to wake, then, even with all your attempts to fall asleep again and get back to that same spot in your dream, you just can't seem to do it. Your rest is ruined, your once fascinating dream is lost and you toss and turn the rest of the night. That is essentially MD.
The final remnants and displaced thoughts of a tormented soul, Diane. From the moment the movie begins we are placed on a carnival spookhouse ride full of bazarr and unexplainable images. What we only grab onto in moments is that, Diane (WATTS), is dead through the entire picture...and only at the last minute of the film does she herself come to terms with her own suicide.
In MD the ideal is too ideal to be real. The bad is too bad to be real. The "REAL" comes in between those fine lines, when things are not so colorful and not so vivid, much the way "REAL LIFE" is. Movies make things out to BIGGER and BETTER or WORSE than they really are, everyone knows that. Notice when Naomi is finally embodied in the DIANE character her life seems more present, more real, more depressed. There is no MYSTERY in that life, no PASSION, no SUSPENSE, nothing...just her and her obsession with a love she cannot have...
That's my take on it...
