    Further two.

For obvious reasons, Marlowe could not afford to be too blatant when laying down his trail of clues. In the play "As You Like It", Marlowe makes some well-documented self-references, and in that instance he did overstep the mark. As a result, for over two decades thereafter the play was treated as a hot potato by Thomas Thorpe and Co - and that despite its great success when it was staged.

Nevertheless, the occasional - more subtle - clue turns up, like the one in II Henry 4, Act 5, Scene 1, where, at line 36, we find a reference to "William Visor of Wincot". No such character actually appears in the play, and since a visor is a face mask, and since Wincot was the home of Shakspere's mother, you can work out who this William really is.

A couple of lines later, we read: "That Visor is an arrant knave" (i.e. a rogue) and then, a little further on, we are told that an honest man can speak for himself, whilst a knave cannot.

    Now what might that mean.......?

    Regards

    Mike Thomas
