On one of the web pages dealing with Mike Rubbo's film, I read that he asks the question: Why would Marlowe enlist a "country bumpkin" (quote) to act as the front man for his plays? Shakspere, in other words.

There was a very good reason for so doing. Marlowe was performing a delicate balancing act between remaining out of sight from the authorities (or some part of them) and putting down markers in the hope that posterity would find his legacy. The last thing he would have done would have been to enlist the help of a genuine playwright, such as Ben Jonson, because Jonson would be seen as a convincing author of those plays.

Marlowe wanted to create a measure of disbelief - at least amongst some people. Amongst the educated people of Stratford, he succeeded in doing so - one describes him in Latin as "our imposter".

    Best wishes
