    Reader comments on 7th Street

Randi Miller's review hits the nail on the head. The subjects of Pais' documentary are certainly interesting, and their stories ought to be compelling. Unfortunately, the film lacks direction and Pais' account of the lives of his 7th Street neighbors is superficial and unreflective. Most frustrating is Pais' unwillingness to address the larger social issues. What gentrification brings with it depends, to a large extent, on the public policies we choose to adopt. IF we continue to weaken tenants' rights, and ignore racism and gross economic inequities then gentrification will mean displacement and homelessness for many. But this need not be the case. Pais owes it to his subjects to acknowledge that the devastation of their lives was never an economic or social inevitability.

It just played on the Sundance channel last night, Aug 24, 2003. We thought it was fantastic and captured the changing times and tides of the East Village, as we knew it.
