Another testament to the pretentious stupidity of critics and the dullness of the general population is the lauding of this complete and utter piece of trash. Lynch made a truly great, ground-breaking film in "Blue Velvet" but has been either too lazy or content to come up with a new idea ever since. "Mulholland Drive" is a laughably inane piece of dreck. To read anything into this movie vis a vis "Meaning", is an insult to anyone's intelligence.

Steven is very correct. I think he missed the truth about the "demon" however. IMO, the "demon" was Rita, burned alive, who came back to "Betty/what was her name" after accident, causing her to suicide. The second half of the movie is chronologically real and the first half is the "blameless" construct of Betty's dead soul...as Steven said, the "what could have been" imagining.
