Subject: COCO is the most important character.
Date: Jun 30, 2003
I am thoroughly convinced this movie is about a single person choosing heaven or hell. There has to be rules though. It must be done through the persons own free will. Coco lays this rule down indirectly while leaving after showing the blonde the apartment. It is said indirectly but remember - we just were shown a camera scene that focuses on a sign. The sign reads "The manager" and has an arrow pointing up!! Perfect.
Immediately after being shown this scene Coco says
"just call me blah blah... everybody else does" which is DIRECT reference to the different religions attaching a single name to the ultimate good.
Shortly after Coco hints that the 'lead' actor hasn't been chosing yet. They believe mundanely the lead for a movie, but it is actually the audition into heaven or hell. Coco also offers the blond to to 'show' her around - but stupidly she refuses, which Coco sadly knows by saying 'But its your choice'. God hasn't turned her back on her, it is her turning her back on God.
Since the premise of an ultimate good, an ultimate evil, and free will of the person being tested.
Being tempted by evil is a force Coco cannot control, otherwise free will wouldn't exist. This is solidified beyond a shadow of a doubt in the later director's party scene, where coco is standing to the right of the director. Coco (The Right Choice) looks at the director, does a little sigh, and the director(or more importantlt, the director's "body" being housed by evil for the Wrong Choice)looks back with that smug, knowing look, as if sharing a secret only the two know. Neither side can make her choose.
The evil side offers one of these chances (for an escape)when the blonde is 'pre-screening' in the moviemaker's room. The evil guy gets within a hair breadth of her - tempting her. He says something horrible and that is her cue to Leave. She could exercise her free will and flee. She doesn't. The demons are incredibily happy because they offered the ULTIMATE test and she willingly followed along. They have won.
The light side - which is _ONLY COCO_ offers a chance in the same dinner scene mentioned above. We see coco in a red dress - same as the blonde, who is currently the one being tested for the ULTIMATE fate. Almost everyone is in black. Coco offers her hand across the table, which is half accepted then removed. SHE JUST MISSED ANOTHER CHANCE!! Seconds later the black dressed men (evil, obvious) begin laughing about stupid mundane things, trying to cover up the fact that this person does not see what is _Truly_ going on. That was another chance for her to fall to the comfort of God but doesn't.
Other random bits:
I like how the "baton" so to speak for the "audition" (for heaven or hell) is passed. 2 women go to stay at the house, but this turns to 3 (triangle maybe?) because the third has 'amnesia' and takes refuge in the house. One of them will be auditioned, but it is their choice to do it or not (the Cowboy) to be in God's house.
There is a single scene where coco passes off a manuscript. Notice who accepts it. Before this the brunnete is sitting on the couch. Coco (God) begins talking to her. This is at the crucial point in the movie where the person to be auditioned is chosen. The brunnette gives her chance up. SHE CALLS FOR THE BLONDE - which is again the baton being passed. Coco cleverly says "it will be on of you three".
One thing i wasn't firm about -
God's court/house/apartment complex - The room #'s must be important. People are in Gods court w/out knowing it, metaphorically. Room 12 isn't 'home' - she is in the 12th place to be tested, the other ones are further down the list - least less than the primary ones - and room 17 - who is so far off the tested list that she is already dead.
If you own this dvd i implore you to watch it with these thoughts in mind and email me. My friend has a completely different feel to the movie, he didn't believe it was 'religious' at all.
