Reader comments on Letters from the Dead

Take German infantry. Add an Italian squad. Add some spice. Stir, simmer in pressure-cooker. Watch. Ari Taub‚s vision of the outcome of this recipe takes you beyond the typical war movie and psychological fiction combined.

Imagine finding a bag of undelivered letters, being privy to their content, and trying to make all pieces of a big puzzle fit, click and compose the bigger picture. As the story unfolds, understanding the context of this correspondence is as important as remembering that not one author of these missives really wished to be in a position to HAVE to give news from the front.

One may ask, with reason: why Germans? Why Italians? Why the two together? Brought together to fight side by side in Northern Italy, informed of the Allies‚ rapid progression, orders were to slow down the enemy, thereby cohabiting with one another as best they could.

Living these times through the soldiers‚ eyes and pen, the notion of „absurdš seems recurrent ∑ Absurdity of that war and the reasons behind it, absurd that people as different as Germans and Italians happened to be on the same side; worse: fight alongside. If tensions are inevitable in such circumstances, here they are intensified by pressure, and compounded by fear.

This is not a tale of heroic soldiers and successful campaigns. This is about taking a soul, digging it in the hope of uncovering a diamond within, or finding dust instead.
