Having not even seen the movie yet, but just reading the comments and the numerous reviews pro and con about the movie, I would think that the director got what he was looking for in viewer response. Most people don't seem to get past the graphic violence portrayed in the movie. Some people say it was too graphic, others casually say "we all know how violent murder and rape is so why show it", then we have gay activist groups complaining how it portrays homosexuals.
Regarding the graphic nature questions. I remember being in school and watching the movie Red Asphalt about highway safety and the reality of vehicle accidents. We were warned before hand how graphic the movie was. I remember not thinking much about reckless driving, drinking and driving, etc. before the movie. Hey I was a kid and I was unstoppable. I recall after the movie thinking very differently, to this day that movie is in my mind. I am confident that the graphic nature at least part of the lasting impact. The point it we can say "we all know how violent murder or rape is", but that is not true, only the people who actually go through the event truly know how violent these acts are. Movies can attempt to portray the violence which I understand this movie does, and that after all is the point of the graphic scenes, to give the viewer the deep disgusted feeling and emotional turmoil that a real victim would go through if only as from a 3rd person perspective.
The fact that this movie has caused such a heated debate on both sides, to me makes the movie a success if what the director was after was controversy.
