    Subject: heavenly acting

This year's Oscar for best actress went to the wrong person, it should have gone to Julianne Moore. But, of course, this is just my personal opinion. I thought she was splendid in her role in "Far from Heaven". I have followed her over the years, always found her arrestingly subtle, sometimes a little contrived, but this time every note was right. I followed the struggle of her character's painful awakening without any effort, and could feel myself inside her skin (not a bad place to be). A greek tragedy under the polished surface of the Fifties in America - it was totally believable to me. The movie was shown here in Vancouver/Canada recently, at a small theatre, preceded by Douglas Sirk's "All that Heaven allows" on that same night. What a feast it was! (Techni)Colors and gorgeous sounds washing over us for hours...The parallels in the story were intriguing too. I kept in mind that nobody in the audience would have smiled (let alone laughed out loud) watching the Sirk's film in 1955 (cried probably), it seems as if Sirk's was the rare director to have the inner distance (being German) to even do such a film dealing with American society during this particular decade, while living in Hollywood himself. The juxtaposed party scenes, natural versus stilted, were hilarious (they are part of Todd Haynes movie as well), but most of all, I felt a purity in Douglas Sirk's characters' pursuit of being nothing but true to themselves which is unusually early to appear in a film even before the Sixties. I felt the same purity in Julianne Moore's performance, long after the Sixties, at a time in the present where purity seems close to obsolete. Both films made me feel and think intensely. They will stay with me for a long time.
