    Reader comments on The Pianist

    Subject: Unfortunate Omission
    Date: Apr 10, 2003

This is for me the most powerful movie since "The English Patient" (which was also set in WW II). An unbelievable but true story, incredibly strong characters, plus unforgettable images make this into a powerhouse...not to forget the music! I relived the movie reading the book it was based on (same title) and was immensely moved, especially by its last chapter - extracts from the diary of Wilm Hosenfeld, the German officer who, at the end of the war, saved Wladyslaw Szpilman's very life. The fact that he was German was the reason of course why this book never got published in Poland or anywhere else, although it had been written right after the war, by the pianist himself. The movie as well as the book show poignantly how war times bring out the best and the worst in people, and so often contrary to what you expect. And sometimes, the "enemy", acting as a single courageous individual, might even become the most humane saviour. It does happen. And the way this was shown in the film, added moral depth to an already breathtaking story. I did not find this mentioned anywhere, not in reviews and not at the Oscar's. Why? The truth is always powerful stuff and needs to be seen and heard, even more so at a time where truth has once again become "the first casualty of war".
