The song was indeed in Spanish and the writer wasn't Don McLean (who wrote American Pie and the incomparable Vincent), but Roy Orbison. It's probably his most famous song, but I'm older than David Lynch and can still remember this stuff. Great movie, wonderful song in it's a capella version as well as the original.

Thanks, Bob R. You read my mind as I was dying to get an interpretation of that song in english. I thought, however, it may have been in spanish. But, how the hell would I know---I slept through three years of it in high school.
I was hoping that it may have unlocked the secret to the movie, rather than confirm what we all already agree upon.
