I thought this film went deeper than a political satire, as some have labeled it. Sure, it does that, but doesn't it also suggest that all of us, at all ends of the human spectrum, have the opportunity to make a choice to better our lives. That choice is in the secret place of our consciousness, moment by moment. Some just play by the cuture's rules all their life; some refuse to think for themselves; some are willing to let others think for them; some have a reverence for God which, in this film's symbolism, suggest that they are well aware of the choices they need to make and have made them. In the end of the film, the guard returns to his place, but his eyes have been opened, he can't sleep; he has to stand guard, he says. Seems to me that's what the creator of 'Secret Ballot' would like to see happen to all viewers of the film. Perhaps I'm seeing symbolism that was never really there. Even so, I thought this slow-paced film was much more than a work of art.
