I've read only half of the comments printed here so far. They're great, and they're probably what Mr. Lynch meant to elicit from the film's viewers.
Me, I've watched the film over a hundred times in a five-month period since I purchased the DVD. I didn't find Mr.Lynch's '10 Clues to Unlocking'the mystery (on the reverse side of the inner sleeve of the DVD) until recently, and I also recently acquired a pc and immediately went on-line to find viewer comments. What a goldmine!
The dream logic, and the beauty in the way it is captured and presented, are the reasons that I keep looking at the film. But my impression upon seeing the movie the first time was one of raw emotion: it had hit upon a sensitive nerve. I would never have rented it and watched it had not my brother asked me to watch it and interpret; I'm not a big David Lynch fan. A comic aside: my brother says the Cowboy is George W.: "If you do as I tell you, you can ride along"....
My emotional connection was one of rage, rage at being abandoned by a lover some ten years ago in an apartment that isn't all that dissimilar in layout to the number 17 that Diane is left to decay in after an apparent suicide. My brother also said he thinks that three levels of consciousness are somehow delineated. Some things in the film happen in three's ( the calls notifying 'the girl is still missing' and 'the same') Numbers 1,2,&3 appear on the pay phone, on the coffeemaker, on the limo license plate 2GAT123(two girls at one, two, three?) It's all very enticing and draws you into the labryinth.

my final conclusion
Okay, after watching the film many many times I believe it all comes down to this (and this goes for all Lynch films). There is no one true conclusion or meaning to the film. The only way to ăunderstandä it is to find the symbolic concepts in our own individual personality. The films are made for each individual to get what they can out of it.
Iâve come to this conclusion because after watching certain Lynch films like Eraserhead, Lost highway, Blue velvet and even Mulholland Drivein the past, I watched them in a different frame of mind. Now growing up and experiencing different things in my life with a whole different outlook, watching them again now I get a whole different experience. I am only 21, so I have a lot of years and experiences ahead of me. Each time I watch a Lynch film I think I have figured it out mostly· until the next time! But there is always something new. So with that in mind everyones theory is welcome because this is how the film has related to them and done its job with what it has intended to do.
Lynch films are great to get lost in; letting go of control and just letting it take you away rather that sitting in the driversâ seat. Sometimes you donât need to know where you are and some people donât like that, which is fine but to me a bit boring.
I really enjoy coming to places like this to read other peoples opinions, and to even learn things because the 2nd best thing about watching a Lynch film is to talk and discuss it. I really love doing this.
So in conclusion what I am trying to say is, it doesnât matter if you like it or not. We all get something different out of it. For those who donât like it, I think it is about understanding. I believe if you donât like something, you just donât understand it. This goes for anything, music, art, film· whatever. If you donât want to understand it is your porogative. As for me, I like to try and understand before I judge.
Shit, I sound like a preacher·
Oh well· I own it for myself.
P.S. does anyone know of any other films or books with the same themes or offer the same or similar experience??
