Woody Allen, when asked in an interview what recent movie he liked best, answered without any hesitation: "Amores Perros". So I thought let's finally check it out. Being terrified by dogs ever since I was a child, the dogfight scenes, no wonder, were a bitch. I battled my way through it, hoping for less violence and more meaning later on. What I really liked about this movie: individuals from all walks of life being connected by "fate" but oblivious to it. Since I do believe that we are all connected in many ways, I got hooked. There was a lot of brutal tension, over-the-top humor and great colorful shots (and not just red for blood), like bottles of paint, randomly thrown at a canvas. But then hasn't the topic been done by Kieslowski ("Blue", "White" and "Red"), and by Tom Tykwer ("Wintersleepers") in more subtle and more convincing ways? Probably unfair to compare European and Latin American cinema. Plus here we have the added "Cain and Abel" story, as a layer in two of the stories, quite an ambitious undertaking. Strong images, some will haunt me for sure (not the dogfight scenes). What part did Woody Allen like, I wonder?
