Sorry this film contradicts the gay media p.r of rainbows and unicorns but violence and twisted sadomasochism are also part of the gay scene so put that in your prick and smoke it. The movie goes beyond leather chaps and wrecked buttonholes to address the larger human concepts of chaos and hurtling through the void with no justice or god overseeing events, no tidy morality plays and the horror of jungle law lurking just below the surface of everyday banal life in the first world. It is an incredibly piece of art and moviemaking at its finest.

    Response to this comment:
Joshua hit the nail on the head

    Irreversible just flat out sucked.

I'm a fan of exploitation cinema, and I've seen (and sometimes enjoyed) films that were much harsher than Irreversible - Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit on Your Grave, Salo: 100 Days of Sodom, etc. I wasn't put off by the graphic violence or the rape scene in Irreversible. In fact, that (plus the gratuitous nudity) was the only reason to even watch the movie.

What pissed me off about Irreversible but the smug, pseudo-intellectual veneer. Apparently, fans of this film drank the Kool Aid, because I keep seeing the same excuses. Let's address them one-by-one:

    1. Irreversible is a realistic portrayal of violence.

Err... no it's not. The rape scene in Leaving Las Vegas (for one example) was realistic. Prostitutes are often the victims of violence. There is absolutely nothing realistic about a gay man anally raping a woman. That's not necessarily a problem - there's nothing realistic about a teenager getting bit by a radioactive spider and climbing walls, either - but it's a flawed argument.

    2. Irreversible demonstrates the irreversible nature of rape/murder.

It doesn't really do that either. If the movie started with the rape of Alex and moved forward to show us the emotional aftermath, THEN it would be dealing with the fallout from the violence in an intelligent way. Because Alex is raped and beaten near to death within the first 15 or so minutes of the film, the viewer doesn't ever see how the randomly occurring violence affects any of the characters, beyond the fire extinguisher murder.

    3. Irreversible challenges conventional norms.

That may be the case, and I enjoy movies that push the envelope in create, innovative ways. For example, the movie-within-a-movie conceit of Anguish worked well in that picture. But I didn't find Irreversible particularly original in its innovation. Memento and several other films released w/in a few years before Irreversible also moved back-to-front. Unlike Irreversible, the back-to-front format actually served a purpose in those films. As far as the camerawork goes, all I can say is: Sometimes conventional norms are conventional norms for good reason. Most directors wouldn't use a 360-degree spinning camera for large portions of the film because it's disorienting for no reason other than to achieve a cheap "effect."

    4. Irreversible perfectly achieves what it sets out to do.

I see some posters defending Irreversible on the feeble grounds that it sets out to be shocking and disturbing and succeeds in that fasion. That's fine - exploitation cinema is all about taboo-busting. I guess my question is, if being disturbing was the only goal could you please spare me the faux artsy camerawork and pseudo-philosophical bullshit about "Time destroys everything" blah blah? Irreversible is I Spit on Your Grave for arthouse fans who want to enjoy exploitation AND congratulate themselves for their edgy taste in cinema. At least porn has the integrity to admit it's exploitation and deliver the goods.

On top of all the conceptual problems, the script is just awful. There's a murder and a rape, and nothing - I mean NOTHING - happens. After the first 30 mins. or so we're left watching these three wander around and talk aimlessly or lay in bed kissing. The characters are poorly drawn and I couldn't relate to one of them. There is virtually no plot. I'm not surprised to learn the actors improvised much of their dialogue, because like everyday conversation, it just ambles on in circles and most of it is damn boring.

In a nutshell, the film is pure exploitative trash, which is fine - I'm a fan of exploitative trash. What infuriated me was the smug, pretentious way Noe tried to pawn this film off as philosophical arthouse fare. You can film a movie back-to-front and with swirling camerawork, but at the end of the day if your plot is empty and your characters are boring, all the stylistic flourishes in the world won't save the movie. I do have to hand it to Noe, though - apparently there's an audience for Irreversible who actually buy his BS, proving once again that you can never underestimate the taste of the public.

This film is the suck. Take off the black turtleneck, shave the goatee and rent Last House on the Left or a porno, instead.
