the film is kind of a fairy tale compared to an actual psyche ward. you have group therapy and interaction with your peers but at the same time most keep to themselves. your physicians prescribe strong medication to keep you sedated for the most part of your stay. the violence is somewhat accurate but a lot of the time is irrational outbursts. the only way to leave in a timely manner is to tell the doctors what they are supposed to hear from you. the ending seemed ridiculous as well. although the characters seemed to be in a well cared for facility if you look at the symbolism of the return it just shows a cycle of repeated visits in and out of different hospitals for the same problems. it seems the overall theme is to rely on medication and listen to therapy. in some reality it is correct in that response. there isnt much progression in any of the characters and i feel that is a strong part of the underlying message of real psychiatric care. if you read between the lines you can see a lot more of reality than the movie projects
