    Reader comments on El Alamein

    Subject: Battle of El Alamein
    Date: Apr 5, 2011
    Sender: Anthony GumbrellPrevious

The British had been fighting the Italians and the Germans in North Africa for about two years, see-sawing back and forth across the desert when the axis advance to Suez was halted at the first Battle of El Alamein. The Brits and their allies built up superior forces and then attacked en mass in the horrific, bloody second Battle of El Alamein. After several days of fighting the Axis were forced into a long retreat and three or more Italian divisions were destroyed. Both sides suffered heavy casualties in this turning point of the war in North Africa.
