After watching this film (yes, I'm late - just saw it by accident via NetFlix) and feeling completely confused and disturbed, I searched for reviews to see others' reactions. The first two reviews I read were too positive and didn't resonate with me. When I read this review I felt, yea - exploitation and coercion on every level and completely devoid of love. Then after reading the comments here, I took one step back... I'm not so sure the director identified with Fred, but perhaps simply portrayed him honestly as the pathetic product of his privilege (he even says in an out-of-character moment of clarity at the end that he is pathetic). Fred is someone I would both despise and pity. The film is disturbing because nothing is clear, no one progresses, and nothing is resolved.
