Sofia "showed us the story" the same as the "main characters" in said novel....

The main characters were not the Lisbon girls or their parents....

The main characters were the "then teen boys, grown to men..that still cannot figure out the "Lisbon girls"; or their actions. (You cannot condemn the Lisbon parents without condeming the boys parents, the girls teachers, Mr. Lisbon's co-workers, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon's church( including clergy members etc.)

If the movie left you asking questions then Ms. Coopola did the novel justice.....There are no specific answwers as to why one commits suicide. Otherwise, both the novel and the movie would have been over after Dr. Honiker's and everyonelse in said "neighborhood" explained both Cecilia's attempted AND sucessful suicide.

IMHO: if one must explain or "lay blame" every character EXCEPT the Lisbon Girl's are responsible for sitting back and watching, rather that "taking action".....

    Response to this comment:
    intersting but extremely non explanatory

I was extrememly disapponited in this film, despite the fact that it was supposed to be this way. I did expect it to be way more explanatory than it was. They did not really explain or intensify just how bad the parents were or their lives for that matter. They also did not mention at all what happened to Trip Fontaine. They did not even show any graphics or anything in the movie of the death on their faces or anyhting. You could not feel what was happening in this movie. No one seemed to care or be dramatic at all when any of the girls deaths had happened. You could not understand it or feel it at all. :(
