i've watched the movie several times.
some interpreters have missed the point, while others are getting close to it.
this is not a movie about cutting yourself to release the tension, it's about how this emotionally disturbed and cruel intellectual has gradually learned how to love his family, due to finding love with a hoe.
it's how godles people learn...it s how messed up kids whose parents left them learn... it s how a grown up really grows... or some of the messed up grown ups.
