    A couple things:

One, Sandler was great, doing everything he was asked to do, but the audience laughed at every serious turn--he's an icon of knuckleheaded comedy, and the audience couldn't or wouldn't shake off his brand image.

Two, Paul Thomas Anderson CAN'T WRITE. He's great at putting eye candy in front of the camera--there are many arresting visuals in this film. But just like Magnolia and Boogie Nights, PTA hasn't got a story, any subtexts, any direction or movement, nothing like a plot, really. I'd love to see him direct and shoot a great script, but the verdict is in--he's going to have to get someone else to write it.

Want proof? Look at Emily Watson...a great actress who has nothing to work with. We know nothing about her, her character never changes, and in the end, she knows what to do...she plays a mother, the one the Sandler character sorely needs. Just look at how she hugs him.

How nice, except for the fact that the writing holes make her implausible. We never learn enough about her to know why she finds Sandler compelling, why she's friends with Sandler's sister, why she's angling for a date, why anything really. She just shows up and WHAM! is instantly and unflaggingly an unconditional-loving mom. That's twentysomething wish fulfillment, not writing.
