I know its a bit late to be giving a view on this film but i am doing it because this is what definitely happens in the film.
At the beginging of the film (just after the jitterbug scene)we see (for a few seconds)daines/betty`s bed, which in daines/betty`s p.o.v IS HER FALLING ASLEEP.
The first 2/3 of the movie is a dream, in the last 1/3 when the movie changes that is the movie`s reality.Just before the movie changes we see "The Cowboy" telling daine who is sleeping on her bed "Its time to get up". So this proves my theory.
Notice at the party (which adam the director and camilla announce their engagement)daine looks up and sees a man dressed like a cowboy. In her dream she re-invents him a mysterious and dangerous character toward the person(adam) who has taken away the woman she lusts after(camilla). She also re-invents adam`s mother as Coco the landlandy.
Daine feels so jealous that she wishes she or camilla never had went to the party so in her dream she fantasies that camilla never made it to it,she fantasies that she was killed on the way(two hitmen telling her to get out of the car in Mulholland Drive) but in fact she was killed in a hotel room.
But in daine`s dream we see some true, when they both ring the room (in which camilla was killed)Camilla says " It feels weird ringing myself".This is a big clue.
The order in which things happen in the movie is not how the really happen.Below is how they infact unfold.
(1)Daine sees adam kiss Camiila on the movie set.
(2)The party in which adam purposes.
(3)Daine hires a hitman to kill camilla and is given a blue key.
(4)Daine falls asleep.
(5)Daine wakes up sees the blue key and realises what she has done, she has killed the woman she loved.
(6)Guilt and disbelief comes over (in the image of the to elderly people in her dream)and she kills herself.
EVERYTHING-ELSE DID NOT HAPPEN. IT ONLY HAPPENED INSIDE HER HEAD WHEN SHE WAS DREAMING.
Also when she is hiring the hitman she looks up and shes a man, Notice, she re-imvents him in her dream, he is the man who seen the demon/bum/burnt man at the back of the dinner. That is again showing us that how dreams can take things with no meaning and give them one. That showed the guilt of what she had done.
There is alot more to explain and i will add to this.
Please comment on what i have said.

mulholland drive
Very weird, intense, thought provoking film.Every relationship you try to make between the characters falls apart, it is fantastic film that arise conversation themes between your friends for days, go and see it!
I wish someone could give me some explanations.
