I woke up with a great headache, but finally came up with my interpretation of what happened on Mulholland Drive. Only 4 events in the film were real: (a) that Diane was rejected for a part, (b) that an automobile accident occurred on Mulholland Drive, (c) that Diane's lover abandoned her and (d) that Diane killed herself. Every other character in the film was a figment of Diane's imagination, fragmented from her personality; and every other event was Diane's fantasy in order to avoid having to deal with what she had done on Mulholland Drive.
The initiating event was Diane not getting an acting part that she badly wanted. As a result, she drove to the director's neighborhood on Mulholland Drive, whether to convince him to hire her or to revenge herself is unknown. While on Mulholland Drive, she had an automobile accident; she survived, but (three) people were killed. After telling her lover (the woman who had "switched" apartments with her) what had happened, her lover moved out, compounding Diane's feelings of rejection and leaving her to deal with the consequences of the accident alone. This is where Diane begins to fragment into various personalities in order to avoid having to face the consequences of her behavior and to avoid dealing with her feelings of rejection.
She imagines that she has only just arrived (the two elderly people are parent figures, approving in the beginning, all-knowing in the taxi and condemning at the end). Both Betty and Rita are alter-personalities for Diane. Betty allows Diane to escape from her deeds and her rejection; she is fresh and new. Rita is the scapegoat for what happened on Mulholland Drive. The scene Where Betty takes Rita to visit her "friend" (whose name is Diane) is fictitious, just as the aunt's apartment is fictitious. The dead woman is Diane's attempt to escape from herself, while maintaining life in the form of Betty. Diane has been living in her own apartment all the while. This is confirmed when her ex-lover comes over to pick up a box of her belongings and addresses "Betty" as Diane. Diane has also created the alter-ego of the hit man, who murders three innocent people, to keep her from dealing with the three people who died in the accident. She created the mafia men and the cowboy in order to justify why the director would choose someone else for the part; obviously, he was forced.
All begins to decreate with her fantasy about El Silencio. Her alter ego in the form of Rita begins to merge with Diane (the blonde wig, the lesbian affair, dreaming out loud to silence her emerging awareness, bringing her to the stage show that imparts the news that things are not what they seem, the song "Crying," which is really what she wants to do). Diane cannot shut out her conscience, causing her Rita personality to reject her (her inability to masturbate) and bring her to Mulholland Drive, where Diane can at last face what happened and begin again. When she is home again at last, in her own apartment, and sees the blue key, which in her fantasy was the item that confirmed someone did the deed on Mulholland Drive, Diane becomes fully aware of her situation. Gripped in panic and terror, chased by condemning parental figures, she kills herself.
