julien donkey boy is compelling, infuriating and pretentious beyond all belief. but the fact that a quote from bertolucci praising korine was used on the trailer already indicated that this would be both an interesting and back slapping, self congratulatory event.

jumping from beautiful to annoying to stupid korine constructs a film with a powerful and fascinating story: that of a family torn apart by mental instability and the bullying tactics of its patriarch. instead of letting this drive the film however korine succumbs to permiting form and experimentation to champion his cause. one scene of the brothers cooking for example is edited into a series of jump cuts, exciting for 10 seconds but from then on tedious and bewildering. korine seems to be quietly tugging at his own cinematic protrusion as if to say 'hey look at me. i might be the moment's cool, bohemian, american film maker but i can make artisitic statements just as well as those europeans.' the thing is is that this just doesn't quite cut it. ewan bremner is brilliant though.
