I think the "REAL ISSUE" that we should be talking about is that real latinas/os have diabetes. It's killing us off at early ages at a rate 60% greater than our Anglo cousins. Am I the weight I want to be? Not a chance. I'm about 50 pounds overweight and when my tia was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago, I started panicking.
Weight control (through exercise and a healthy diet) is the single most important thing we can do to prevent succumbing to this quiet killer.
Yes, people of different heritage tend to have different body types. But let's remember the emotional and psychhological damage that having a poor self-image does to a person. Isn't that something to consider?
I guarantee you that I will spend less time and energy and heartache losing my excess weight than I will learning to love my fat butt and gut. Because when I'm back down to 170 pounds (I'm a guy, by the way) I won't have to worry about snide comments from heartless people. I won't have to justify my blubber with psychobabble. And if I keep up my exercise and healthy diet, when I see that tempting dish of flan, and hear it calling my name, I can suck it down knowing that it's not going to go straight to my beltline.
I will never again have the body I did when I was sixteen, but I can at least have a body that doesn't turn up as the subject of a movie that won the "most politically correct award." And it won't be a body as much at risk of diabetes.

The real issue
most of you have obviously missed the whole point of this movie. Weight is one of the last things it talks about. It's about loving yourself whether that's through your body, your relationships, or the decisions we make in our lives. growing up and loving yourself is not a "latino" experience it's something everyone faces. The fact that "weight" is the only thing being spoken about is a testament to how obsessed our world is with weight. the job of a film is to raise issues and make people think, and this film does the job. Let's not turn this site into a place to bag on each other, Let's have some self-respect.
