    ---CONTAINS SPOILERS---

I think if there was more screen time, we would have seen that Jimmy's wife wanted Katie out of the picture.

Yes, the Laura Linney character was extremely jealous of Katie, but this was complete subterfuge, given away only in hints in other parts of the movie...

1.) Jimmy (to police) elaborated on the emotion invoked by the nocturnal kitchen talks with Katie. They were the "only two people left in the world." (Would make a wife jealous--one who's trying to have a family and raise her own daugthers and get equal face time with Jimmy.)
2.) Jimmy's wife tells him at one point, "you've got three other daughters, you know."
3.) She is not Katie's biological mother.
4.) Jimmy spoke of Katie's mother to the police, right in front of his wife. He spoke of her in ways that made her sound like an elegant queen, entirely unmatched.
5.) Jimmy's wife seduces him after confessing his murdering Dave. She calls him a king (that makes HER the queen now?)
6.) Also...she couldn't believe Dave's wife would tell others that she thought her own husband killed Katie, which only proves that she, herself would be protective and deceitful.
7.) Jimmy breaks down and tells God that his "soul knows" he is somehow responsible for Katie's murder, but that he does nt know HOW. (By default, being too attached to her, and not as much with his new family.)

So, in any case.....Jimmy's wife was damn glad Katie was dead.

    Response to this comment:
Saw movie, but still confused about crime details.

I must be the only person who thought this when first viewing it - but I thought at the end of the movie that the murder that Dave committed and the murder of Katie WERE actually connected. I thought that Brendan was not only controlling of his younger deaf-mute brother Ray Jr. (who actually could speak) but that he molested him as well. I thought that this was the molestation that Dave had witnessed, although the fact that none of the brothers had a scar on their faces contradicts this theory. Perhaps there was another person involved? I dunno, but I left thinking that Dave had witnessed a molestation involving the Harris brothers, and that Dave brutalized, maybe killed, one of them. Still trying to understand what Katie and her car had to do with this, and how she would miraculously stumble upon Dave and her brothers. The simple explanation that Ray Jr. was jealous of Katie and that the killing was planned makes more sense.

Oh well, I guess the only thing that makes sense is that the molestation that Dave witnessed and the murder of Katie were two separate crimes that happened at nearly the same time in nearly the same place, and that there was no incest going on with the Harris brothers. Such a twisted subject to be discussing, but what the hell, right? It was a twisted movie.
