    Reader comments on The Return

    Subject: divine move

I read this movie totally differently instead of seeing the father as distant and God as absent, what I see is almost allegorical. The father having been gone for reasons good or ill comes back. The children after having been raised by women are now stuck with a choice, "Do I follow my father, or not?" What we see is that the father is truly loving of his children.
We only have so much time to teach our children right from wrong. In those few days his children were taught philosophy "How do we move him?", the younger asks. "With our little hands.", the older replies. He doesn't use sarcasm to mock his father, the boy is being true and supporting a lesson that he has learned, work to achieve goals, don't sit like children, helpless. Abuse is bad, yes and the father does hit the son. Why? because the son has turned to blatant disrespect. The younger thinks now is the time to turn my brother against him, but without pretense or duplicity the father guides the boy into a responsible position, that of driving a car. He is presenting an ethic, an ethic not of indulgence but one of being of use in present danger and in genera.
As to the father's lot in the end, what we are shown is not an impotent act leading to sadness, instead what we see is a love acting constantly. He gave worth to an otherwise self-absorbed boy. The father exists in a violent world one where people are put to the test. His children were raised by him in those few days. Our moments are numbered and the younger child, though not a villain, trapped his father into death. I am sure the youngest child was not left unaffected and indeed learned a great deal about life. The father instructs even in death.

    About "The Return"

Every father who struggles to communicate what he truly feels with his sons (is there a father who does not?) must see this film. Even more, every father who does not see the point of such communication should see this film and talk about it with his sons. Every middle school, every Columbine, should show this film. Every boy who has ever had to try to stop his father while his father pummeled his brother in a rage will see and feel what others watching this film cannot. The absent god, the absent father: same thing. How tragically ironic, that only by pushing the boy to the brink of suicide or murder does this father begin to know his own feelings for his sons, and thereby destroys himself.
