Re: AfroArgentinos
I was lucky to catch this on a double bill with "Sangre Africana" about Black Mexicans, also a great doucmentary, but "AfroArgentines" was nothing less than amazing. Not because my own heritage is Argentine, my mother was born in Mar Del Plata, but because I also take a deep interest in Black history of Argentina, the "whitest" Latin American nations. When I was there in 1994 I saw only 2 or maybe 3 "Black" people and even very few Indians, except for Misiones near the Brazilian border, but this always confounded me. This film highlights some of Argentina's foremost experts on the subject, the PEOPLE themselves, especially Miriam Gonzales "la profesora" who is an extremely intellgent and humble woman. I learned much about the African diaspora of Argentina (BTW I saw the bill as part of the AFRICAN DIASPORA NY festival in Nov 2004) and didn't know that the celebrated Italian neighborhood of "La Boca" (one of Buenos Aires' oldest and most beloved) is also home to the many Cape Verdeans who settled in Buenos Aires in the 30's and 40's. I didn't see any dark skinned people in La Boca during my visit but then again I was only there for 1 or 2 hours...so it was very informative and humbling. I think Menem is no different than a Hitler or a Stalin and the COJONES on that guy to say what he said ( There are no Blacks in Argentina, Brazil has that PROBLEM!! ) in WASHINGTON D.C. of all places where the poulation is 90% black...it's a wonder he didn't get beat down D.C. style!!
Oh well, a brillant documentary in my eyes one of the best ever, along with Mike Moore's lil experiment and "Supersize Me, " although completely and utterly different subject matter. 5 of 5 stars
