Subject: Nicholas Hoult as THE kid for this:
    Date: May 10, 2008
    Sender: Susan ColbertPrevious

I discovered this film only a couple years ago and was enchanted by it, Hugh notwithstanding (I've never liked him, much, or disliked him...rather like the effect Will has on people in this film!).

True, Nicholas is "no Haley Joel Osment", but that would have been disastrous! Much as I like the latter, he radiates confidence and brilliance, even while plagued by ghosts ("The Sixth Sense") or a ne'er-do-well mother who sends him to live with two whacky uncles ("Secondhand Lions").

Can you even imagine Haley Joel subduing his pride enough to knock on Will's door, or count on him NOT to intellecualize his Mum's suicide attempt? No. But Nicholas CAN do that, and does, wonderfully. He's not stupid, but very, very confused, as who wouldn't be when raised by a mother who, as Will puts it is a "barking lunatic"?!

While Osment seems more like an island than Will, Hoult is quite believable as a kid who needs SOMEBODY in his beleaguered new life. His solution (getting "backup" in the form of other adults and fellow kids) is simplistic...but it works!

In the end, I can see a curmudgeonly loner (since I'm one myself) enjoying the company of a kid like Marcus, but not any of the ones Osment has played. He's too intense.

This film seems simplistic, but perhaps it works because often, the solutions to our loneliness and depression, and even the feeling of "not meaning anything" (Will's dilemma), are right under our noses, and not that complicated.
