It's interesting that you saw those similarities betweeen MD and Twin Peaks, because I found several parallels between MD and Blue Velvet.
- the velvet robe that Aunt Ruth leaves for Betty, and that Betty places over Rita looks almost identical one to what Isabella Rosselini wore in BV. The only difference is, Rita's robe has red accents, and Isabella's was (duh) blue. (sorry for switching back and forth between character names and actor names, I can't remember what the Blue Velvet characters' names were.)
- The song "Crying," though sung in Spanish in MD, was originally performed by Roy Orbison. In Blue Velvet, Lynch used Orbison's "In Dreams" to spooky effect. And that in itself is a clue that MD is about Diane's fantasy life "in dreams." Also, Isabella Rosselini sings the song "Blue Velvet" almost acapella (though not quite), much like the "Crying" performance.
- The monster/homeless man puts the blue box inside a crumpled-up paper bag, and the camera zooms in for a close-up in MD. This mirrors the scene in BV that zooms in on the severed ear, and later, when Kyle MacLachlan puts the ear in a brown paper bag.
- Similar (yet twisted) relationships are developed in both BV and MD. In BV, the innocent blond Laura Dern falls for the bland Kyle MacLachlan. He, in turn, falls for the mysteriously exotic Isabella Rosselini. In MD, the innocent blond Naomi Watts falls for the mysteriously exotic Laura Harring who, in turn, falls for the bland Justin Theroux.
Are there other similarities I'm not seeing?

bifurcation
alright, i loved this movie, but this is the third time (after twin peaks and lost highway) that i've felt a complete paradoxical understanding/not-understanding of a movie. There's a few things that these 3 movies share in common that i feel like i kinda understand and i'm hoping you guys can help me with.
First off, clearly, there's some sort of bifurcation/doppleganger/duality/yinyang theme expressed through various pairs of characters in each movie. The most obvious is the betty/rita pair. But there's also the Bob/Leland pair (from twin peaks). And the pair of Patricia Arquettes (from lost highway).
There's some kind of significance in colors especially red and blue. In fact, is this another way of expressing the doppleganger theme?
There has to be some kind of tie in between MFAP (man from another place - twin peaks) and Mr Rok (played by same actor - mulholland dr) and maybe even the Blake character in lost highway. Remember how MFAP used to always say "let's rock!", and now the character's name is Mr Rok?
There's definitely some kind of Laura Palmer/Betty tie in. The kept showing that black and white photo of Betty that always reminded me of the Laura Palmer photo they would show at the end of every twin peaks episode.
Anyway, there's way more stuff i noticed that i feel like i understand but at the same time i can't explain at all. Can any of you articulate this insanity for me?
thanks.
