    Reader comments on Respiro

    Subject: reviewer should do research

In regards to the reviewer's comment that the children are too attractive and therefore unbelievable--all the children are non-professional actors from the very tiny Island of Lampedusa. It seems that in reality sun-drenched Sicilian Islands produce more than the expected craggy character looks.

Also, he/she should remember Visconti's La Terra Trema, another filmed cast with non-professional Sicilian natives. One can see that Antonio Arcidiacono (the protagonist Ntoni) is a looker even in the grainy neo-realist flick.

An interesting clip from Crialese's casting of Respiro is on You tube under the title Respiro Backstage.

Another thing. The dogs in the movie aren't the town's dogs, but wild and abandoned ones. Italy has a very distressing abandoned animal problem. There are often "canili" or overcrowded dog shelters to deal with these animals. Crialese is realistically depicting this cruel reality and not simply constructing a ludicrous scenario just to underscore Grazia's rebellious free spirit as the reviewer seems to suggest.
