    Subject: hated it!

I came away from this film, literally traumatized, by the horrific cruelty depicted. I have since discovered, after speaking with an Orthodox woman I know, that the "facts" are not facts----that standard Orthodox practice would never cast out a "barren wife" and banish her. The lousy part of all this is that the film is so well done, and seems so realistic, that while watching it I felt I was getting an education on Orthodox Judaism. To not begin the film with disclaimers---about Orthodox Judaism/real Judaism---is a despicable thing, especially since the film was made by Jews. When I first thought these "commandments" (as relayed in the film) were real, I experienced real hatred toward my own people---and I am a Jew! I can only imagine the hatred and disgust and horror that non-Jews felt when they watched this film. If Jews created this, then I despise those Jews. What's the point? To make us hate the Orthodox? To make non-Jews hate all Jews? I believe we, as Jews, should have a much greater sense of responsibility--and intelligence-- to anticipate reactions such as mine from the populace.
