    Reader comments on El Alamein

    Subject: Re: writing screenplays

The exploits of the Italian Army in WWII is indeed a rich area for study and poorly understood. I speak both as an amatuer student of WWII and as a person with Italian heritage (both of my mother's parents were born in Italy and emigrated in the 1920's). From my limited reading the Italians themselves remain conflicted about this period of their history. There is some shame over the consequences of fascism, as well as the overall less than stellar record of Italian arms in general. There were individual instances of incredible valour and heroism on the other hand which have not generally been recognized or celebrated. It is nice to see a film like 'El Alamein' redress the imbalance in the historical record. The battles in Eastern Africa (Africa Orientale) during the first year of the war have never received film treatment, and the destruction of the Italian Army on the Don River in Russia in 1942, along with the disappearance of so many Italian prisnors into Siberia (never to be heard from again) also deserve fuller treatment.

The reason that there are few Italian tanks in the movie 'El Alamein' has to do in part with the fact that the Italian armored units were occupied elsewhere, and also in part due to the fact that period tanks are hard to come by. The few British tanks you see in the film are not period, incidentally, but this is partially obscured by the use of darkness. A great study of the courage of Italian tanks in North Africa is found in a book entitled 'Iron Hulls, Iron Hearts' by Ian Walker, which is also a good read.

    writing screenplays

I am an aspiring screenwriter interested in the war movie genre. I want to do 2 movies on Italian forces. One concentrating on the folgore during the battle of El Alamein, the other on the Decima Mas. If anyone can suggest any reading material to help me with my endevor I will greatly appreciate it.
